Research field

The synthesis and structural characterisation of transition metal spin clusters and the study of their magnetic properties using low temperature Magnetic Susceptibility, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance and Inelastic Neutron Scattering measurements.

This is a fascinating area of study fuelled by the recent discovery that the molecular cluster [Mn12O12(OAc)16(H2O)4] (Mn12Ac) shows magnetic bistability of molecular origin. Mn12Ac has a magnetic hysteresis at 2 K similar to that observed for bulk magnets and the associated bistability can in principle be used for data storage. This suggests the possibility of a dramatic increase in the storage capacity of magnetic media with the storage of one bit on a single molecular cluster of a sharply defined size.
